Business & MSME

Register your small business on Udyam for free

How to get an MSME registration certificate at no cost using only Aadhaar and PAN, what the classification thresholds mean, and what the certificate actually unlocks.

Check before you act. Government fees, deadlines and portal steps change without notice. We verify each guide against official sources on the date shown above, and we link the official page for every step — confirm there before you pay anything.

Udyam registration is free, takes about fifteen minutes, needs no document uploads, and produces a permanent registration number. It is one of the least burdensome government registrations that exists, and it is also one of the most aggressively counterfeited — dozens of paid lookalike sites rank above the real one in search results.

The real portal is udyamregistration.gov.in. Nothing else is official, and nothing should cost you anything.

Before you start

  • Aadhaar of the proprietor, or of the managing partner or authorised signatory for other entity types.
  • An active mobile number linked to that Aadhaar.
  • PAN of the business, and GSTIN if the business is required to be registered under GST.
  • Bank account details of the business.

Step by step

  1. Go to the real portal

Type udyamregistration.gov.in into the address bar rather than clicking a search result. Paid intermediary sites frequently outrank the official one and charge for a free service.

  2. Choose your applicant type

New entrepreneurs who are not yet registered, or those migrating from the older Udyog Aadhaar or EM-II registrations, use different entry points on the homepage.

  3. Authenticate with Aadhaar

Enter the Aadhaar number and name of the proprietor or authorised person, and verify the OTP. For companies, LLPs and cooperative societies, the authorised signatory's Aadhaar is used alongside the organisation's PAN.

  4. Validate PAN

Enter the entity's PAN. The portal validates it and pulls turnover and investment data automatically from income tax and GST records — which is why no documents are uploaded.

  5. Complete the enterprise details

Business name, type of organisation, address, commencement date, bank details, principal activity and National Industrial Classification codes, and employment numbers. Choose the NIC code that genuinely reflects your main activity; it affects scheme eligibility.

  6. Submit and download the certificate

You receive a permanent Udyam Registration Number and an e-certificate with a QR code. It does not expire and does not need renewal.

If something goes wrong

A site asked you for a registration fee

It is not the government portal. Udyam registration is free. If you have paid, treat it as a consumer complaint and file at consumerhelpline.gov.in.

Aadhaar OTP not received

The Aadhaar-linked mobile is inactive or changed. Update it at an Aadhaar centre first.

PAN validation fails

Check that the PAN belongs to the entity type you selected — a proprietor's personal PAN for a proprietorship, the company's PAN for a company.

You already have Udyog Aadhaar

Migrate rather than register afresh. The portal has a separate path for existing registrations.

Questions people ask

What does Udyam registration actually get me?

Recognition as an MSME, which is the eligibility gate for priority sector lending, several central and state subsidy schemes, preference in government procurement, and the protection of the delayed-payment provisions for MSME suppliers.

Is it mandatory?

Not for every business, but it is required to claim MSME benefits and is increasingly asked for by buyers, banks and government tender platforms.

Do I need GST registration first?

Only if your business is otherwise required to be registered under GST. If you are not liable, you can register on Udyam without a GSTIN.

Does the certificate expire?

No. The Udyam Registration Number is permanent, though your classification may shift as your turnover and investment figures update.
