Grievance & Safety

Register as a voter or correct your voter card

How to enrol on the electoral roll, fix a wrong name or address, shift your registration to a new constituency, and download the digital voter card.

Check before you act. Government fees, deadlines and portal steps change without notice. We verify each guide against official sources on the date shown above, and we link the official page for every step — confirm there before you pay anything.

Voter registration is free, takes about ten minutes online, and is handled through a single national portal. The forms are numbered rather than named, which is the main source of confusion: Form 6 for new registration, Form 7 for objecting to or deleting an entry, and Form 8 for corrections, shifting and replacement.

Registration is tied to a constituency, not to you personally. If you have moved, you are not registered where you live now until you shift it — and an entry left behind in your old constituency is a problem, not a spare.

Before you start

  • You must be a citizen of India and at least 18 on the qualifying date.
  • One photo identity proof and one address proof for the address where you are registering.
  • A recent passport-size photograph, scanned.
  • Your existing EPIC number, if you are correcting or shifting.

Step by step

  1. Create an account on the Voter Services Portal

Go to voters.eci.gov.in and sign up with your mobile number. This is the Election Commission's own portal — there are many lookalike sites offering 'voter card services' for a fee.

  2. Check whether you are already registered

Use the electoral roll search with your name and constituency, or your EPIC number. People are often already enrolled from a school-based drive and do not know it. If you are, you need Form 8, not Form 6.

  3. Choose the right form

Form 6 for first-time registration or for registering in a new constituency after moving. Form 8 to correct details, shift within the same constituency, replace a lost card, or mark a disability. Form 7 to request deletion — including deleting your own old entry after you move.

  4. Fill and upload

Enter your details exactly as on your identity proof, upload the photo and documents, and submit. You get a reference number.

  5. Track the application

The status moves through verification by a Booth Level Officer, who may visit your address. Be reachable. Track using the reference number on the same portal.

  6. Download the e-EPIC

Once approved, download the digital voter card from the portal. It is a valid identity document and does not require the plastic card.

If something goes wrong

Your name is missing from the roll on polling day

Little can be done that day. Check the roll well before an election — rolls are revised periodically and entries can be deleted.

You are registered in two places

This is an offence. File Form 7 to delete the old entry as soon as you register in the new constituency.

Name spelt wrong on the EPIC

Form 8, with a document showing the correct spelling.

The BLO never came

Follow up through the portal's grievance option or call 1950 with your reference number.

Questions people ask

Is the digital e-EPIC valid?

Yes. The e-EPIC is an official document issued by the Election Commission and can be used as identity proof and at the polling booth alongside the roll entry.

Can I register before turning 18?

You may apply in advance ahead of a qualifying date, as long as you will be 18 on the relevant qualifying date. The portal shows which qualifying dates are open.

What if I moved to another state?

File Form 6 for the new constituency, and Form 7 to delete the old entry. Voter registration does not transfer automatically.

Do I need to pay anyone for a voter card?

No. Everything is free on voters.eci.gov.in. Any site or agent charging for voter registration is charging for a free government service.
